Flags

Flags purchased through our online bookstore have been flown over the USS Arizona Memorial. All flags come with an 8.5” x 11” Certificate of Flag Presentation suitable for framing, which states the date and time that the flag was flown. Please be sure to include in the comments section of the order form the name(s) to be inscribed on the certificate (for military personnel please list Rank, Rate, Full Name, & Date of Service).

Flags are flown on major holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th, September 11th, or December 7th. Or you may request a flag be flown on a specific future day. To request a flag be flown on a specific date, please submit your order no later than 2 weeks prior to the date, but no more than 2 months in advance. If a specific date is not required, please list "Any Date" in the comments section of the order form.

The USS Arizona Memorial is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day, therefore no flags can be flown on those dates.

Generally, nylon flags are suitable for flying while cotton flags are more appropriate for presentation. Flags are made in the USA.

Rosie the Riveter
WWII profoundly changed the role and status of women. As the military's need for manpower increased, so did the industry's need for womanpower. From 1940 to 1944 over six million women joined the workforce filling jobs that had previously been exclusively male. Despite initial concerns, by WWII's end women had proved to be a formidable, invaluable force in the War effort.

The "We Can Do It!" poster, created in 1943 by J. Howard Miller, encouraged women entering the workforce. 1942's "Rosie the Riveter," a popular homefront song, became a nickname for women in the war workforce. These "Rosies" included Rose Bonavita, who drove a record 3,345 rivets into a torpedo bomber in 1943.

As men returned from WWII, most women left the factories. But the confidence, competence, and earning power they had experienced forever changed America's workplace. Over time, Rosie has become an icon symbolizing women's strength, determination and ability to do any job.
