On 9 December 1941, less than forty-eight hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor that launched the Pacific War, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander in chief of the Combined Fleet and at that moment the most celebrated officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy, ordered his staff to prepare plans for an invasion of Hawaii.

This order set in motion what was to be the most ambitious and far reaching Japanese operation of the Second World War. A Japanese conquest of Hawaii would have changed not only the course of the war but the nature of the eventual peace. This book will describe the genesis of the idea of a Hawaii invasion, show why the Army and Navy general staffs at first opposed and then supported it, and reveal how civilian planners envisioned Hawaii under Japanese rule.
